Non-Sequential Writing July 18, 2011

We all know I am a plotter. I revel in spreadsheets and outlines and character sketches and all that jazz. While it may be assumed, I feel it is also important for me to confess that I am very much a linear writer. Once I have an outline, I start at–well, the start–and I go until I get to “The End.” ;)

You know this new novel I’m working on? The thriller (hee hee hee!)?

Well, I suppose I am writing it sequentially in a way, but not really. There is a collection of scenes that occur at various points throughout the novel, and I am writing all of them first. I am writing them in order – the first one first, the last one last – but I am not writing them at the point in the outline at which they slotted.

I really hope this novel turns out. It’s a bit of a departure for me (for one, it’s not sci-fi), and it’s far riskier in its structure than anything I’ve tried in the past. It may be that I am not experienced enough yet to pull it off, but I won’t know that unless I try. I do know, however, that I have to write this story down. There’s no way I can ignore the premise – it makes me feel all goofy inside just thinking about it.

I still find it hard to believe I’m highlighting sections of my outline that don’t follow one after the other. This is such a strange departure for me – I keep glancing at my printed out spreadsheet and shaking my head.

How many of you have to write from the first word to the last? Is there anyone who jumps around, writing the chapters that appeal in random order?

The Firestorm Conspiracy IN PRINT! June 9, 2011

Yes, you read that correctly.

The Firestorm Conspiracyis now available in trade paperback from Amazon. It’s officially labelled Book One of the Firestorm Saga because I fully intend on repairing the sequel and launching it in some form or another. I’m using Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat book on screenwriting to wrestle the plot into submission.

Actually, I use the term ‘plot’ loosely. I know NaNoWriMo is all about quantity, not quality, but I have learned my lesson: One should not write 55,000 words of romance without paying any attention to the rest of the story. It is not a simple thing to ‘simply add a plot’ into the mix. My poor sequel is poised to go under the knife (no, that’s too gentle – it’s going under the chainsaw).

As we gear up for summer vacation, my plate is beginning to fill up. The textbook people have been in contact with me again, and I have some more work to do for them. The Firestorm Betrayal is getting a deep makeover and I have another YA novel (about mental health–suicide–with a sci-fi twist) I’d like to draft. Plus, Nikko is going out on submission soon and there’s always the possibility that whichever publisher picks him up will want a sequel or companion book too!

I am thrilled with the writing piling up – I love it. I live for it. Bring on summer vacation!

Goodreads and Pre-Orders May 11, 2011

I’m giving away two free copies of The Firestorm Conspiracy over on Goodreads. I believe in making contests easy, if you’d like to enter, all you need to do is leave a comment in the topic below:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/551919-the-firestorm-conspiracy-giveaway

If you’re one of those people who just *has* to spend your hard-earned cash on a book, and you cannot stomach the thought of acquiring a copy for free, a wonderful friend spotted these two options:

http://www.booku.com/The-Firestorm-Conspiracy/Cheryl-Angst/ebook_573386.htm

http://www.booksonboard.com/index.php?BODY=viewbook&BOOK=1043290&v=widget

I can’t believe you can pre-order my book. I’m still struggling to accept the reality of publication, and seeing it available for pre-order (like it’s in hot demand or something) is way too surreal. The advantage of the pre-order is you get it at 12:00 am on May 16th, whereas there might be a few hours’ delay on the larger sales channels.

And look! It’s on sale at Books on Board! All the more reason to snag a copy. :)

Don’t worry, if you want to buy it through Amazon or one of the other BIG stores, I’ll post links on the 16th.

Until then I’m going to pretend I am not checking my inbox every five minutes as I wait for my agent’s response to my revisions on Nikko. Nope. Not me. I am one cool cucumber. *moves mouse over inbox tab*

Okay, so I googled Firestorm Conspiracy review this morning and discovered a few things.

One, my book trailer is on a movie/video review site based in the UK:

http://www.nme.com/movies/trailers/id/kYVk9m4OEDo/search/movie

Two, I posted before about bloggers and sites reviewing my book, but here are a few more I didn’t know of:

I thought I’d put these all in one place for convenient access. I’m curious to see how people react to my book – especially since my launch party is only two weeks away and it looks like it’s going to be well-attended!

April Update April 22, 2011

I realised I haven’t been very forthcoming with my writing progress over the past several months. I’d love to say it was because I was working on some top secret project that I could only now reveal. Alas, it was simply because I was so focused on the writing I never considered telling you about it.

That, my dear readers, is about to change. Brace yourselves for a no-holds-barred update on where my writing career is at.

At the end of March the textbook people told me to hold off writing the teacher’s guide until they could get me the revisions for the student workbook. I was a little frustrated by this (I’d wondered about the wisdom of writing the teacher’s guide before the student book was set, but the contact only gave me two weeks between the two deadlines and I didn’t want to miss it). I’d hoped this contract would be fulfilled by late March so I could go back to writing fiction.

Given my forced waiting with the math stuff, I decided to finish my NaNoWriMo novel. I promised my cheerleader a sequel to The Firestorm Conspiracy, and I got 55,000 words into it during November, but December led to agents requesting Nikko and eventually the excitement around signing with Brianne Mulligan at Movable Type, so I never finished it.

Oooh, I also had to do several edits and proofs for Firestorm in order to get it ready for publication, and those took a tonne of time. Thankfully, I wasn’t also textbooking.

Life is funny sometimes. I was all excited about my ‘free’ time – I was going to finish my sequel and make my cheerleader ecstatic (or insane, depending on her reaction to the grand finale planned for the book), and then my agent sent me an email. She wanted to let me know she felt the sooner we got Nikko out the better – before all the publishers filled their YA dystopian quotas for the year.

I broke the news to my long-suffering cheerleader and set to work on revising Nikko with my eleven pages of editorial notes as a guideline. My goal was to increase the book’s length by about 20,000 words and change the ending, leaving the story more open to a romantic sequel (I’d left it open for further book[s], but I hadn’t planned on carrying a love triangle through, so that had to change).

I’ve been working steadily on Nikko for three weeks now, and I’ve added close to 13,000 words and four entirely new chapters. I’ve fleshed out one minor character into something of an antagonist, and I’ve gone far deeper into both my main characters’ pasts as well as the world building.

I’ll be honest, it’s hard. My brain does mental gymnastics every time I sit down and tackle a new element. I’m always saying, “Let’s see, how can I…” and then I’m gone – lost in a universe of my own creating. I love it. I love, love, love it. I wanted to get the revisions done by the end of the month, but as I’m only half way through the original version I think I’ll need more than the week remaining.

During a moment of procrastination I decided to submit a short story to a couple of magazines. I’m not expecting a reply for at least four more weeks, but I will let you know as soon as I hear anything.

I am expecting the revision request from the textbook people to arrive sometime next week. As this is something I am under contract for (and they’ve paid me a third of the agreed upon amount), I will have to set Nikko aside to work on them. Hopefully they won’t be too time-consuming and I’ll be able to get back to Nikko shortly thereafter.

On top of all this, I am also planning a launch party for The Firestorm Conspiracy. I can’t believe it will be available to the general public in just over three weeks. My first novel. Published. People other than my husband and mother buying something I made.

*SQUEE*

Phew, I told you this would be quite the update. You may relax now, it’s pretty much over. At the risk of becoming boring or tedious, I will endeavour to update you more often.

Bad Austen Contest Results April 18, 2011

Woo hoo!

After waiting and wondering, and emailing and tweeting, the winners of the Bad Austen contest were notified earlier today. I did not win the $250, but my short story, John & Rebeccah: Love ‘Midst the Stars, has been chosen for publication in the anthology coming out in November.

I am thrilled to be adding another publication credit to my name.

I’m even more thrilled by the fact that a story involving the characters from The Firestorm Conspiracy has found its way into a print anthology. :-) The more people who read about, and fall in love with, John and Rebeccah, the happier I will be.

C.

PS – A special shout out to my fellow #badausten tweeters: Thanks for your support throughout the wait! Glad to hear you’re getting responses too. :-)

Bad Austen April 14, 2011

The judges announced their pick for the winning entry in the Bad Austen contest.

http://badausten.com/announcement-the-top-votedjudges-picked-entry-winner

I didn’t expect my sci-fi snippet starring characters no one other than my blog readers have heard of to win the cash, and I still have hope the writing is strong enough for it to be chosen for publication in the anthology. Everyone who has their work chosen is supposed to be informed over the next few days. *crosses fingers*

In other news, The Firestorm Conspiracy has been picked up by several book review sites around the globe (USA, UK, and Australia)! I’m totally excited by this – more to see how I’ll handle my first set of “official” reviews than by the reviews themselves. I have no idea how I’m going to react to the comments, and I’m curious to see how it feels.

I promise to post links to the reviews as soon as I have them.

You know it’s getting close to launch day when excerpts from your book start appearing around the web. My editor and I finished the last of our proofreading (30 pages of changes folks!), and the publisher just sent me copies of the FINAL version in all its various ebook formats.

And now that the last of the changes have been made, samples are being drawn from the document and shared around the world. Here’s the link to the excerpt on the publisher’s website:

Welcome to 2011 January 1, 2011

The new year is off to an interesting start for me. I’m juggling the math textbook, keeping Nikko’s Bond in front of agents, finishing the Firestorm sequel, and playing around with my new YA WIP.

When I first started the math textbook, it was like I had a switch in my head; flipped one way, I could think about writing non-fiction but was completely cut off from my fiction ideas and creativity, and flipped the other way, I could work on my fiction stuff, but the idea of math gave me a headache. It’s getting easier to switch between the two types of writing, but the first day was brutal. It took me a LONG time to get into the right mindset for writing non-fiction, so once I was there, I was reluctant to leave lest it take several hours the next day to get back in again. I thought it was a good idea to ignore my fiction and go to bed still in textbook mode.

I was wrong.

Boy, was I wrong.

I barely slept. My mind wouldn’t relax and slip into its usual pre-dream state. I could ‘see’ my novels on the other side of the glass, but my mathematical mind wouldn’t let me go play with the characters. It was one of the worst nights ever. And, to top it off, I awoke with a vicious migraine. Now some of you are going to claim this as coincidence (and I’d be willing to do the same, except for one tiny detail), but I’m doubtful. You see, when I get a migraine it always starts behind my left eye and spreads from there. In fact, that’s how I know I’m getting a migraine as opposed to a normal headache. This migraine though, was firmly centered behind my right eye. I have NEVER had a migraine on that side. Ever.

And people wonder why some people hate math. Dude! It makes my brain hurt!

All joking aside, I am enjoying the challenge of writing non-fiction and I like how it’s stretching my brain ‘muscles’ in new (okay, not new, but long-neglected) ways.

With all the excitement of a new WIP, the textbook, and the various Firestorm novels, I’ve been neglecting Nikko’s Bond. Starting this week I am going to go through my list of agents and see precisely where I’m at. A few new agents have come onto the scene since July when I made my initial query list, so I will probably spend some time checking them out to see if any might be a good fit.

I’m still working on the sequel to The Firestorm Conspiracy, and while I’m not 100% sure I’ll be querying it, I do have three possible e-book publishers in mind if I decide to put it out there. The first is Lyrical Press – even though they have decided to discontinue their sci-fi line, they are more than willing to look at subsequent books from their authors, AND seeing as the story seems to have turned into a romance, it kind of fits with their other lines anyway. The other option is a Canadian e-book publisher, MuseItUp. They publish all genres and give preference to Canadian authors. I don’t know if they’d be interested in running a sequel, but you never know. The third option is more of a long shot as it’s Harlequin’s e-book line, Corina Press. But, the novel’s not finished yet, so I don’t need to worry about any of this for quite some time.

On a fun note, I was trekking around Lyrical Press’s site and noticed they’ve pretty much finished all the covers for their January, February, and March 2011 releases. That means the April and May ones are next. I can’t even begin to imagine what my cover will look like, but if the other covers are any indication, it will be amazing. I can hardly wait to see it!

2011 looks like a promising year for my writing journey. I have and e-book coming out in May, a textbook later in the year, and hope on the horizon for my first YA novel as well as possibilities for a Firestorm sequel and a new, darker, YA. At this point anything is possible, and that’s a really exciting place to be.
